Build it, Say it, Write it: The Effective Use of Manipulatives and Representations in KS2 and KS3

20 November 2018

We are excited to offer this one day programme drilling down into the effective use of representations and manipulatives for KS2 and KS3 practitioners.

Date: February 26th 9am – 3pm

Following on from a fabulous workshop at our conference, Pip Huyton is returning for a full day of training!

Pip has been an independent mathematics consultant for over 20 years.  She has extensive experience in providing CPD and supporting school improvement in both the primary and secondary sectors throughout the UK.  Pip writes materials and produces resources for publication.  She is passionate about supporting and developing teachers to enable them to provide learning experiences that all students can access, allowing them to fully develop their mathematical thinking and reasoning.  The use of technology has been a key element of her work in supporting mathematics education and she is an enthusiastic supporter of the STEM agenda.

We know from the EEF’s Improving Maths KS2 and KS3 Guidance Report that the effective use of representations and manipulatives is a cornerstone of high impact teaching.

‘Manipulatives and representations can be powerful tools for supporting pupils to engage with mathematical ideas. However, manipulatives and representations are just tools: how they are used is important. They need to be used purposefully and
appropriately in order to have an impact. Teachers should ensure that there is a clear rationale for using a particular manipulative or representation to teach a specific mathematical concept. The aim is to use manipulatives and representations to reveal mathematical structures and enable pupils to understand and use mathematics independently.’

Date: February 26th 9am – 3pm
Cost: £90 for the full day
